Chateau Woods: A Historical Overview of the Village

Chateau Woods is located east of Interstate Highway 45 about ten miles south of Conroe and twenty-seven miles northwest of Houston in southern Montgomery County. This residential development began in the 1960s as the Lake Chateau Woods Subdivision. In the late 1960s the Lake Chateau Woods Civic Club was organized, and by the 1970s members actively pursued incorporation. On December 6, 1975, residents voted to incorporate, and the following year, the Village of Chateau Woods had a mayor and five aldermen. Leon Kennedy served as first mayor. In 1980 the village had a population of 590. That same year, aldermen voted for the village to become the City of Chateau Woods. The population increased to 641 in 1990. On August 14, 1993, citizens voted to disincorporate and form a municipal utility district. The area reported 1,091 residents in 2000. Situated on a 400-acre development, Chateau Woods is strictly residential and has a volunteer fire department and a marshal's department. Many citizens commute to Houston .
