Oscar von Claren, naturalist, was born in Germany in 1812. As a colonist of the Adelsverein, he migrated from Hanover to Galveston aboard the Apollo with Richard Cloudt, and arrived on December 20, 1844. He settled in New Braunfels, Texas, to join Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels by March 21, 1845. Von Claren was elected commandant of a local militia that protected settlers on April 28, 1845. He associated and traded with local Tonkawa Indians to acquire animal skins. Von Claren owned property at the corner of modern-day Comal Street and San Antonio Street. His family correspondence indicated his interest in botany and wildlife of the New Braunfels area, and he collected turtles and snakes to sell to naturalists in Germany. He wrote Indianer bei Neu Braunfels im Jahre 1845 (1845), a group of essays depicting Texas Indians. On October 24, 1845, while on a collecting trip to Austin, Claren and his companion,Friedrich Wilhelm von Wrede, were killed and scalped by Comanche Indians near Manchaca Springs. He was buried at Nassau Farm in Fayette County.
