Discover Columbia Lakes: A Premier Resort Community in Brazoria County

Columbia Lakes is a resort community located eleven miles west of Angleton in western Brazoria County. In 1971 Tenneco, Inc., an industrial corporation with headquarters in Houston, announced that its property division, Tenneco Realty, had acquired and opened a 1,200-acre recreational and residential development in the Brazos River valley. The community was probably named for the nearby town of West Columbia and for the 300-acre twin lakes that were constructed on the property. A large conference center and country club catered to vacationers and corporate groups. By 2000 Columbia Lakes encompassed an area of 2,000 acres, and the resort featured an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, and facilities for other recreational activities. That year the community reported a population of 646 residents.
