Fairview, on U.S. Highway 87 five miles northwest of Big Spring in central Howard County, was named for the view afforded by the flat land around it. In 1930 it had a population of fifteen and two commercially rated businesses. By 1940 its population had grown to fifty, and a school was located there. Between 1950 and 1960 the population was 100, but the last business had closed. In 1980, 1990, and 2000 the population was eighty-five.
