Goober Hill: A Historical Overview of the Farming Community

Goober Hill is a small farming community on Farm Road 2427 located about eighteen miles southeast of Center in southeastern Shelby County. The settlement may have started by the early 1900s and was named for the peanuts, locally known as "goobers," that were a major crop in the region. During the 1930s Goober Hill, located in Sabine National Forest, consisted of many farms. The nearby school in West Hamilton served local residents. By the late twentieth century Goober Hill still appeared on county highway maps, but no population figures were available in 2000.
