Discover Indian Creek: A Historical Overview of the Community

Indian Creek is a residential community located south of State Highway 31 about seven miles west-southwest of Tyler in western Smith County. It was named for nearby Indian Creek, which had been a hiding place for Cherokee forces in 1839. Farmers probably settled in this area in the late 1800s to early 1900s, and by the 1920s the region of Indian Creek had its own school district. The residential community of Indian Creek most likely began sometime after the construction of the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company plant in the early 1960s, when employees moved into the area. In 2000 Indian Creek had a population of 300.
