Exploring Rose Hill: A Historic African American Community in Texas

The tiny community of Rose Hill is located on Farm Road 222 about two miles east of Coldspring in east central San Jacinto County. Rose Hill was settled by African Americans in the late 1800s and was named for the abundant wild roses that grew on a hill where the town was developed. During the 1930s county highway maps showed homes and one business in the area. By the late twentieth century Rose Hill consisted of a few homes and Rose Hill Cemetery. In 1990 the population was ten. That figure increased to thirty in 2000.
