Ben C. Stuart: A Pioneer in Texas Journalism (1847–1929)

Ben C. Stuart, son of Belinda S. (Chambers) and Hamilton Stuart, was born at Galveston, Texas, on April 20, 1847. He began his newspaper career on his father's Galveston Civilian and for twenty-five years worked for the Galveston News as commercial and marine reporter, city editor, and telegraph editor. During the Civil War he was a member of Company I, First Texas Heavy Artillery, but saw no actual fighting. He wrote a variety of historical sketches of Galveston as well as Texas Indian Fighters and Frontier Rangers (1916) and History of Texas Newspapers (1917). The Ben C. Stuart scrapbooks are in the Rosenberg Library at Galveston. Stuart died at Beaumont on March 11, 1929, and was buried there.
