The History and Impact of Texas Monthly Magazine

Michael R. Levy began publishing Texas Monthly in February 1973. The magazine reflected a sophisticated yet straightforward approach to contemporary life in Texas. Over the years Texas Monthly has reported on issues such as politics, the environment, industry, and education. As a leisure guide the magazine covers the music, the arts, travel, food, museums, and cultural events. As of 2008, Texas Monthly had received nine National Magazine Awards from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Every two years, following the legislative session, an issue is devoted to the best and worst legislators, and the magazine regularly publishes service stories such as "Best Small-Town Cafes." The magazine has had three editors-in-chief; William Broyles, Jr. (1973–81), Gregory Curtis (1981–2000), and Evan Smith (2000–). In 2008 Texas Monthly had a circulation of approximately 300,000 paid subscribers. The magazine was based in Austin and was published by Emmis Publishing, L.P.
