Waterwood is a resort community located off U.S. Highway 190 on the northwestern shore of Lake Livingston, about twenty-seven miles northeast of Huntsville in northern San Jacinto County. This 8,000-acre development began in 1972. In October 1974 the Waterwood National Country Club, built by Horizon Properties Corporation, opened. The Waterwood Improvement Association, Incorporated, oversees the community. Waterwood has a private security force and a volunteer fire department. The country club offers various recreational amenities including an eighteen-hole golf course, marina, conference center, swimming pools, and a park. In 2000 the population was 100. Many property owners were part-time residents and retirees.
